Is more better or is less more? I remember when I had a 10-speed bike and my mate got a 15-speed that I was jealous. I eventually got an 18-speed bike, but then another mate got a 21-speed. Now you can get 30 gears on a push-bike!

I also vividly remember hitching down from Canada to the USA in a truck. The driver had 15 gears to play with as well. How do you know which one you’re in?

So, it’s battle of the gearboxes. Everyone wants to be like a Mack. Lexus has an 8-speed ‘box, and now BMW is playing catchup. Of course you could have CVT with a larger number of ‘ratios’.

What are the benefits of 8 cogs? Increased fuel economy is a big drawcard, but on a purely marketing scale people will want an 8-speed ‘box only if they don’t have to manually change gears.
