Big brother will take over your car

We all like the idea of a remote agent being able to stop our cars if a thief decides to play rally driver through the city streets, smokies in hot pursuit. But would we give up our (supposed) freedom for the insidious intrusion of GM’s OnStar Stolen Vehicle Slowdown system? You can read the article and watch the video in the news section of Car and SUV (www.carandsuv.co.nz). The questions that immediately spring to mind focus around whether the system is hacker-proof, and what happens when it goes wrong. An malfunctioning system causing several cars to lose power on a busy road in dense fog could have disastrous consequences. Or, if a criminal gang finds a way of creating a hand-held device that de-powers cars they can essentially stop a vehicle to carjack it, or even reverse OnStar’s instructions. I’m sure OnStar and GM have thought of all this, but it remains to be seen (on a global scale) how they can communicate that it will be flawlessly safe.
