Automotive anniversaries all the time

May 8th, 2008 by darren

Every week it’s some anniversary or other. A couple of weeks ago it was Land Rover’s 60th. There’s a brand new Defender 110 sitting in the warehouse right now ready to be reviewed. This week it’s the 80th anniversary of the RAK 2 rocket car built by Opel and piloted by Frifz Von Opel, grandson of Adam Opel, the founder.

The historic footage is incredible, showing the 24 rockets propelling the car at AVUS near Berlin, as Fritz snakes his way up the track. He achieved almost 240kph…without a helmet. What a nutcase.
