Are electric doors gimmicks or useful?

It’s a gimmick I thought when I picked up the Kia Carnival and found out it had electrically opening side doors. Simply press a button on the keyfob and the door opens. I won’t use that, I thought, but I was wrong. Walking back to the car with my laptop, I started the rear door opening and by the time I was there it was open. Instead of using my muscles to then close the door I pressed the button again as I opened the driver’s door, got in and started the engine. By the time I’d done that the rear door was closed and I’d expended no unnecessary energy. I can feel my muscles wasting away as we speak.

Not only are the side doors electric, but the tailgate is as well – both opening and closing. None of this pesky exertion business. Though, eventually I expect to be weak enough that even pushing the button will seem like hard work.

I’ll tell you what is hard work, though – getting the Kia into my small garage alongside another car. There’s 4 inches room either side!
