Toyota Yaris Edge 2010 Review

In a world of mass production and broad appeal design finding an edge is not an easy task. But this hasn’t stopped carmakers from exploring small additions and various tweaks for their existing vehicles in the pursuit of stimulating sales. In the case of the Toyota Yaris the extra kit has come in the form of a special edition package named Edge. The new Toyota Yaris Edge has expanded the Yaris range in NZ and claimed a place as the highest-spec variant in the line-up. So what exactly gives this Yaris the edge over its siblings and what is Toyota giving you for the extra coin? Car and SUV revisited the Yaris to find out exactly what the Edge is all about.

Priced at $31,800 the Edge commands a $2,800 premium over the standard 1.5-litre Yaris ($28,990), so where’s the extra money going?

Mainly into exterior aesthetics, not quite to a ‘pimp my ride’ level but enough to keep the Yaris looking dapper as it gets into the latter stages of its lifecycle. Additions for the Edge include front fog lamps, handsome 15-inch alloys (the standard model rolls on steel rims), and a full sports styled body kit. What really sets the Edge apart from other members of the Yaris clan is the athletic look that comes with the body kit. It’s a comprehensive fit-out with front and rear bumper skirting pieces, side skirts and a roof spoiler at the rear. There’s also a replacement front grille that gives the Edge its own face. The body kit extends the Yaris’ natural lines well and with the vehicle’s raked back windscreen, high waistline, and stumpy bonnet it has a pouncing stance.

In the Edge cabin there are no visual upgrades over the standard Yaris, with the seats finished in the same cloth and it shares the same silver, black and grey colour scheme. Although the sporty exterior accessories don’t extend to the cabin there’s still a lot to like. The digital mid-mounted instrumentation is a feature and although it won’t suit all tastes it helps give the driver unbroken forward vision. Side visibility is also good thanks to a low window line at the front. Elsewhere, hard plastics mix in with soft and although the ergonomics are sound there’s still a bare-bones feel to some materials. That said, everything is well screwed together and there’s a real sense of durability. When it comes to space, front passengers are well catered for but the back seat is mounted quite high meaning taller occupants may struggle to get comfortable head room. Luggage capacity in the hatch is also limited and is less than most other subcompacts. However, the rear seatback can slide forward or fold down flat to reveal a handy 737-litre capacity.

The Edge has no mechanical differences over the standard Yaris and uses the same 1.5-litre 4-cylinder engine with variable valve timing. It produces a modest 80kW of power and 141Nm of torque which is enough to get it zipping around town but not enough for a truly sporty drive like the body kit and alloy wheels would suggest. During motorway cruising the Yaris is nicely settled but open road passing moves will require some forward planning.

Shifting the gears on the Yaris Edge is a 4-speed automatic transmission. It’s not as advanced as some of the conventional auto boxes in this market segment, but it shifts cogs predictably and works hard to extract all available power from the small engine. Despite not having a fifth speed, the auto box assists the Yaris in returning a decent 6.7l/100km fuel economy.

Hit the twisty roads and the Yaris handles itself well. The 15-inch tyres offer decent grip and it doesn’t feel narrow and top heavy like some subcompacts can. It changes direction with an acceptable amount of body roll and will only understeer wide during cornering when pushed hard. It’s around town where the Yaris is most at home with a tight 9.4m turning circle and light electronic power steering. Dynamically the Yaris is not over-endowed with power but it’s very useful in urban environments and reasonably competent on longer journeys too.

On the safety stage the Yaris performs well achieving a 5-star NCAP crash rating. Traction and stability control are now included and a full compliment of airbags surround occupants including driver and passenger front and side airbags, driver’s knee and curtain shield airbags. There’s also ABS brakes with brake assist and seatbelt pre-tensioners.

So is the Yaris Edge worth the price premium over the standard model? Well, the answer to this question all depends on looks. With no mechanical upgrades included in the package it comes down to if you want your Yaris to stand out from the pack. What the Edge body kit and alloys does is better align the Yaris aesthetically with sharp dressed competitors like the Ford Fiesta and VW Polo. If sporty looks are important to you then why not pony up an extra couple of grand? With or without the Edge package the Yaris represents a good measure of safety, style and reliability, which should push it into the consciousness of any subcompact buyer.
