Mercedes-Benz: 2014 C 63 AMG Edition 507 review

IMG_0439When swapping over from the CLA 45 AMG reviewed on Car and SUV last week, to the new C 63 AMG Edition 507 pictured here, I posted a picture of the two cars side by side on my personal Facebook page, and the caption read, “from the sublime to the ridiculous”.

The reality is, I was wrong, it was actually the other way around.

DSC_0168 2The C 63 AMG Edition 507 is quite a different beast to the CLA 45 AMG, its sublimely powerful, sublimely smooth, and although it has the same stick-to-the-road qualities as its smaller CLA sibling, the Edition 507 is a proper rear-wheel-drive sports sedan.

And just like other obscenely powerful rear-wheel-drive sports sedan, it will occasionally break traction, especially on damp surfaces if not treated with the respect it deserves.

Where the CLA 45 AMG could be described as a hyperactive DSC_0179terrier that incessantly tugs at your trouser leg begging for more, as you drive along, the Edition 507 with its port-injection 6.3-litre V8 engine is more of a laid-back Rottweiler, it will docilely growl away in a corner, until provoked out of it by an incautious right foot, and then all hell will break loose, as the traction-controlled rear-wheels manfully try to put all the power to the ground.

As I said earlier, despite having the most sophisticated active and passive electronic safety systems in the automotive world, this is a car that demands driver respect. While there is no substitute for cubic inches, there is also no room for idiocy or complacency whilst enjoying said cubic inches.

So, what differentiates an Edition 507 from a standard C 63 AMG, about 37 more kilowatts of power and $14,507 more dollars to be exact, which lightens the wallet but provides the owner an even more performance orientated sedan.

Mercedes-Benz says the Edition 507 utilises the same dynamic, high-performance technology exhibited in the SLS AMG. As part of the AMG drivers package fitted to this car, the hand built Mercedes-AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine under the bonnet of this C63 AMG produces 507 DSC_0172horsepower or 373kW, in comparison to the 336kW of the standard car.

The C 63 AMG Edition 507 sedan (and coupe variants) accelerate. from 0 – 100 km/h in 4.2 seconds and while the station wagon version takes 4.3 seconds according to Mercedes-Benz. It outperforms the standard 336 kW model by two tenths of a second, and the 358 kW AMG performance package variants by one tenth of a second each. Top speed is electronically limited to 280 km/h.

DSC_0180Just to show how special this engine really is, on the engine cover, it carries the autograph of the AMG engineer who built it, in this case one Stefan Wuiklermuth.

Externally, the Edition 507 is characterised by a number of exclusive design features, most notably the bonnet, which originates from the C 63 AMG Coupé Black Series. Darkened styling features and new 19” AMG light-alloy cross-spoke wheels differentiate the Edition 507 from standard C 63 AMG models.

DSC_0171It is further differentiated by the AMG high-performance composite braking system, AMG high gloss black lip spoiler, matt graphite grey sports stripes, red AMG brake callipers, darkened headlamps, illuminated door sills with AMG lettering, and the Edition 507 badge discreetly mounted on the dashboard.

In side the cabin the multi adjustable front bucket seats are incredibly comfortable, you can adjust the side bolsters to be more snug and grip you more firmly for those jaunts to the circuit for a bit of track fun.The Harmon Kardon sound DSC_0168system is awesomely powerful with good clarity and sound reproduction, and will leave the backward-cap wearing doof-doof brigade green with envy.

It has the usual luxury car accoutrements of bluetooth audio and telephony, remote steering wheel controls, heated front seats, satellite navigation, but also tri-zone climate controlled air-conditioning which also allows the rear occupants to control the temperature in their cabin separately to the front occupants.

Our test vehicle was fitted the optional driving assistance plus package, that adds active blind spot assist and active lane keeping assist, as well as brake assist plus and pre-safe brake to the radar cruise control system known as Distronic plus, which when set will slow the car down and bring it to a complete halt when following another vehicle.

As a daily urban driver the Edition 507 will easily accommodate 4 adults and I managed to squeeze five people in for a short trip across town. The rear seats do fold down, thanks to remote levers in the boot which allow a 60/40 split of the rear seat backs, but there is no centre fold-through for long skinny items such as skis.

DSC_0164Luggage capacity is still generous, you will easily accommodate a number of suitcases inside the boot, or in my case being a part-time rugby-team manager, a sack of rugby balls, a crate of drink bottles, a laundry bag full of rugby jerseys, a chilly bin full of ice, and a gym bag!

While the interior didn’t feel quite as special as the CLA 45 AMG, I have to say the Edition 507 has a black piano lacquer trim that looks elegant and is easily cleaned, as were the Nappa leather seats and other plastics in the cabin.

DSC_0182The white paint however, took a great deal of elbow grease to bring back up to its pristine shine, after a few days of inclement weather the road grime around the lower sills and wheel arches became unsightly and needed rectifying ahead of our photography session.

One interesting piece of technology that popped up (twice) during my drive was the low tyre pressure warning system, which is part of the high performance ABS brake system.

The left rear tyre had picked up a nail, and although DSC_0174everything looked normal to me externally, it was off to the tyre centre I went to have the offending piece of metal removed late on a Friday afternoon. Thankfully there was no damage to the optional 19-inch AMG cross-spoke alloys fitted to this car, and off we went again.

Well blow me down, two days later, while driving home from the supermarket, the low tyre pressure monitoring system bleeped again. Sure enough, there was a dirty great screw embedded in the middle of the front left hand tyre.

Its a great system, and no doubt one that would save lives, particularly if you were travelling down the autobahn at the 280km/h top speed of the Edition 507, fortunately I was tootling down St Andrews Road in Epsom at 50km/h.

Fuel consumption from the 6.3-litre V8 averaged around 18 to 19l/100km during our test week, but this was due to mainly urban running, had we spent more motorway time in the Edition 507, I’m quite sure we would have returned an average fuel consumption of 12 to 13l/100km.

For the majority of our test drive we left the engine, suspension and seven-speed automatic transmission in comfort mode, but there is a sport and a sport plus mode which allows the driver to further explore the dynamics and abilities of this very special AMG.

While the fuel consumption was certainly on the higher side of the ledger, I enjoyed the power, poise and performance of the Edition 507, particularly on a quick jaunt from Auckland out to Murawai and back. I enjoyed the comfortable bucket seats and the tactile feel of the Alcantara lined sports steering wheel and the similarly clad gear shift lever.

The ride quality from the combination of low profile tyres and race-bred suspension is firm, uncomfortably so at times, but this is the trade off for the cars ability to hang onto the road (or a track circuit) at high velocity, leaving the driver in total control of his/her responsive thoroughbred.

The standard C 63 AMG has a retail price of $166,900, the Edition 507 package is an additional $14,507 which gives a manufacturers list price of $181,407.

Our vehicle was also equipped with 19-inch AMG cross-spoke alloy wheels in black for $1990 and the driving assistance package plus for $4600, giving a recommended retail price (excluding on road costs) of $187,997.

With a new generation of C-Class impatiently waiting in the wings, now is the time to act to secure the last of this model, because it is highly likely that this generation of C 63 AMG cars will be the last to be fitted with the naturally aspirated 6.3-litre V8. It is highly likely that the next will have a smaller capacity bi-turbocharged V8.
