Gordon Murray reveals ultra economical T.27 electric car

June 30th, 2011 by Darren Cottingham

Gordon Murray became famous for his design of the now iconic McLaren’s F1, and even before that he was well known for his radical ideas in Formula 1 teams such as Brabham. Now, Murray is lending his skills to much greener projects and the latest is a unique city car.

Earlier this week Gordon Murray Design pulled the covers off its very compact city car, named the T.27. The project for this micro machine was seen from concept to prototype in just 17 months. What’s even more impressive is that time frame included the design of a new electric powertain by Zytek Automotive Ltd. The project cost an estimated £9 million, with half of the funding coming from the UK government-backed Technology Strategy Board.

Murray’s aim for the car was ambitious: to create a completely new kind of vehicle, one that would address the problems of CO2 emissions, city congestion, parking and be sold at a low cost.

The T.27 weighs just 680kg including the battery and is 2.5m in length, 1.3 in width and has a height of 1.6m. Top speed is rated at 105kph and it can sprint to 100km/h from standing in under 15 seconds. It’s range is between 160km and 210km on a full charge.

Murray had this to say about the project’s focus, “lightweight is the most powerful tool we have in our armory in the fight against emissions and fuel consumption. This is true of all cars, especially electric vehicles, since a lightweight car means a lightweight battery, increasing the levels of safety and reducing the retail price dramatically”. June 29th, 2011 by Darren Cottingham

It’s style never appealed to all but there was no denying its raw power and now the Bugatti Veyron is looking down the barrel of retirement. It tool seven years and a gang of special edition variants but the Veyron 16.4 hardtop has now reached its promised limit of just 300 cars.

The model will continue for a limited time in Veyron Grand Sport convertible form but for now hardtop production is over.

In 2003 the Veyron stormed on to the hyper car scene and was unmatched in terms of aggression and absolute power. Powered by a 8.0 litre W16 engine, which is force fed by four turbochargers the Veyron produces 736kW in regular form and 883kW in Super Sport trim.

The Veyron’s top speed is a confirmed 408.47km/h, and 431.072km/h for the Super Sport. The 0-100km/h sprint is dispatched in a terrifying 2.46 seconds, and after 10 seconds you’d be already pulling 240km/h. Continue reading “Bugatti Veyron nearing absolute retirement” »

If you’re a fan of the ute and also a Jeep enthusiast then you would have been pretty excited when Jeep announced it may bring out a pickup truck. The bad news is that the Jeep ute project has ben put on the backburner for now, but hey, it might still come to fruition.

Jeep CEO Mike Manley said in a recent interview, “We’re still in recovery mode and have to be very careful with our investments. We have so much going on. Our resources are fully dedicated to small vehicles and working with Fiat. There are none left to work on the Jeep pickup at this time.”

He went on to add, “There’s clear interest in the U.S. for a pickup” and “It could also give us potential for some of our international markets even though the pickup market is slightly different outside of the U.S.” Continue reading “Jeep ute gets postponed… for now” »

Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon is the new installment in the Transformers film franchise and is due on the big screen in NZ very soon. The movie will be a familiar formula with large scale action scenes, some eye candy and shameless product placement of General Motors’ vehicles.

Perhaps the most famous of these superstar movie vehicles is the yellow Chevrolet Camaro that goes by the name stage name Bumblebee. As in the previous movies this banana-and-black Autobot is fashioned in a form that will be repeated as a special edition Camaro available to fans.
